Why online sessions work better than you might expect
One of the most common hesitations about online spiritual healing is whether it can really be as effective as in-person work. For most modalities, the honest answer is yes — and in some cases, clients report the online setting actually allows them to go deeper, because they are in their own environment and feel more at ease.
Energy healing, in particular, has been practised at a distance for decades. Reiki, for example, has a well-established tradition of distance healing that predates the internet. The practitioner's intention and the recipient's receptivity are what matter most — not physical proximity. Guidance-based work like astrology, tarot, and human design readings translate seamlessly to video, often with no perceptible difference from in-person sessions.
The main exceptions are body-based modalities where touch is central — certain forms of somatic work, massage, or physical sound healing with instruments placed on the body. For these, in-person is still ideal where possible. For everything else, online works.
Step by step: how to book your first online session
Get clear on what you are looking for
Before you search for a practitioner, spend a few minutes getting clear on what you are actually hoping for from the session. Are you drawn to energetic work — reiki, clearing, sound? Guidance-based work like astrology or tarot? Something more exploratory like spiritual coaching or an Akashic Records reading? Clarity on this helps you search more effectively and communicate more clearly when you reach out.
Browse practitioners and explore their free offerings
Do not book the first person you find. Take time to look at several practitioners in the modality you are drawn to. Read their profiles, look at their testimonials, and — critically — experience their free content before you book anything paid. At The Spiritual Healers, every practitioner in our directory shares a free practice inside our Classroom. Start there.
Reach out with a short, clear message
When you have found someone who resonates, contact them. You do not need to write a detailed account of everything you are going through — a short paragraph is enough. Introduce yourself, briefly describe what you are hoping to explore or work on, and ask about availability and pricing. Pay attention to how they respond. Responsiveness and warmth in the initial contact is usually a good signal.
Ask your practical questions before booking
Before you pay, it is reasonable to ask: What exactly is included in the session? What platform will we use (Zoom, Google Meet, phone)? Will I receive a recording? What happens if I need to reschedule? How long does a session typically last? Good practitioners welcome these questions. If someone seems reluctant to answer them, take notice.
Confirm the time zone and logistics
For an online session with a practitioner in a different country, double-check the time zone when you book. This is one of the most common sources of confusion in online bookings — verify that the time you are agreeing on is clear for both of you, and add it to your calendar with the correct local time immediately after booking.
Prepare your space before the session
Where and how you show up for an online session matters. Find a quiet place where you will not be interrupted. Close unnecessary browser tabs and silence your phone. Have water nearby. If the modality calls for it — particularly energy healing or breathwork — you may want to lie down rather than sit at a desk. Some practitioners will send guidance on this in advance. If they do not, ask.
Integrate after the session
This step is undervalued and genuinely important. In the hours and days following a session, give yourself time to rest and notice what arises — emotionally, physically, or in terms of insight. Avoid filling the rest of your day immediately after a session if you can. Drink water. Write down anything that felt significant. The session's work often continues to unfold over the 48 to 72 hours that follow.
What to have ready before your session
Depending on the modality, there may be specific things to prepare.
- For astrology or Human Design: have your exact birth date, time, and location ready. These are essential for an accurate reading.
- For tarot or oracle readings: you might have a specific question in mind, or you may prefer a general reading — either is fine. Know which you want going in.
- For energy healing: wearing comfortable clothing and being able to lie down flat during the session, if the practitioner recommends it.
- For breathwork: a mat, blanket, and comfortable space to lie down. Practitioners will often send specific preparation instructions.
- For all sessions: a stable internet connection and a device with a camera and microphone you trust. Test it beforehand if you are uncertain.
- A journal or notepad to capture anything that comes up during or after the session.
Tip: If you are new to this and feeling uncertain about what to expect, it is completely fine to tell the practitioner that. Most experienced healers will take extra care to explain the process and check in with you throughout a first session. Vulnerability and openness actually tend to support the work.
Online vs in-person — a quick comparison
If you are weighing up whether to seek out someone locally or book online, here are the key differences in practice.
Online advantages: Access to the widest possible pool of practitioners worldwide. More comfortable and familiar environment for many people. No travel time. Often more flexibility in scheduling. Works well for the majority of modalities.
In-person advantages: Better for touch-based modalities where physical contact is central. Some people experience a stronger sense of containment and presence in a shared physical space. Local community building. Preferable for certain types of ceremonial or group work.
For most people exploring spiritual healing for the first time, online is a completely valid starting point — and often becomes their preference once they experience how well it works. Browse our directory and filter for online practitioners to see who is available.

After your first session, give yourself two to three days before deciding whether to book again. The integration period often reveals more than the session itself. If something significant shifted — or if you are curious to go deeper — that is usually a good signal to continue. If the session felt flat or the practitioner did not quite resonate, there is no obligation to return. The right practitioner for you is out there, and finding them sometimes takes a little searching.
Trust your experience. That felt sense after a session — whether you want more of this or whether it was not quite right — is real and worth listening to.
