What a Human Design chart contains

A Human Design chart (called a bodygraph) is generated using your birth date, time, and place. It produces a detailed diagram showing which of the nine energy centres in your design are defined (consistently active) and which are undefined (open and receptive to influence). From this comes a significant amount of specific information about how you function.

The four most practically important elements of your design are:

01
Type
There are five Types in Human Design: Manifestors, Generators, Manifesting Generators, Projectors, and Reflectors. Each has a different energetic strategy for moving through the world — a way of engaging that works with their design rather than against it. Type is the foundational level of the system and often the most immediately useful.
02
Authority
Authority describes how you are designed to make decisions — which internal signal to trust when facing a choice. Different authorities include the gut response (Sacral), emotional clarity over time (Emotional), self-projected voice (Self-Projected), and others. Understanding your authority can fundamentally change your relationship with decision-making.
03
Profile
Your Profile (a combination of two numbers, e.g. 1/3, 2/4, 6/2) describes the role you are here to play in life — the flavour of your life path and how you tend to engage with learning, relationships, and purpose. Profiles are drawn from the I Ching.
04
Defined and undefined centres
Your defined centres are where you have consistent energy — where you are a source of that quality in your environment. Undefined centres are where you are receptive and amplifying — where you pick up and magnify the energy of others. Understanding your undefined centres is particularly useful for empaths and highly sensitive people.

What Human Design is actually useful for

Human Design is not a predictive system. It does not tell you what will happen or what you should do with your life in a prescriptive sense. What it offers instead is a framework for understanding how you specifically are designed to function — which is different from how you may have been conditioned to function.

Much of the value in Human Design comes from the contrast between your design and the "not-self" — the patterns of behaviour adopted through conditioning, people-pleasing, and trying to operate in ways that work for other Types. Recognising where you have been working against your design — pushing when you are built to respond, deciding from the mind when you are built to decide from the gut — can explain patterns of burnout, frustration, and misdirection that have otherwise seemed mysterious.

Practically, people use Human Design for:

  • Understanding decision-making — learning to trust the right internal signal
  • Energy management — understanding how they are designed to use and restore energy
  • Relationships — how different Types and designs interact and complement each other
  • Career and purpose — understanding what kinds of work and environments align with their design
  • Parenting — understanding how children of different Types need to be supported differently

Human Design readings

A Human Design reading with an experienced practitioner goes significantly deeper than what any automated chart reading can offer. A skilled reader brings the system to life in the context of your specific life — helping you understand not just what your chart says but what it means for how you have been living and what might shift if you started to experiment with your design.

Readings are typically done online and last 60–90 minutes for a foundational reading, with follow-up sessions available to go deeper into specific aspects of the chart.

Experimenting with your design

The Human Design community uses the word "experiment" deliberately. The system does not ask you to believe anything — it invites you to try living according to your design and notice what changes. For most people, the most significant experiments involve applying their Strategy (the action principle for their Type) and Authority (their decision-making signal) consistently for a period of time — usually suggested as at least 90 days.

The changes people report from this experiment range from subtle to significant: clearer decisions, less energy depletion, more natural alignment with opportunities, and a reduction in the friction that comes from living against one's own design.
